Gemini CLI WordPress MCP Setup
Gemini CLI supports remote MCP over Streamable HTTP with OAuth. Gemini web custom apps are a separate account-dependent path; neither client has a live Studio verification in this release.
Gemini CLI configuration
Choose a fixed callback port, add http://localhost:8765/oauth/callback to Studio, and use the matching redirectUri in the CLI configuration. Keep the endpoint HTTPS; only the browser’s callback uses loopback HTTP.

Gemini web custom apps
Google documents adding custom MCP apps in Gemini web. Feature availability varies by account and region. Confirm access to custom apps, then use the exact callback supplied by Gemini; Studio intentionally does not guess or broadly allow Google callback URLs.
Google’s custom app instructions describe the client-side flow. Record a successful site_status and read test before treating the connection as verified.
Gemini CLI versus Gemini web: which WordPress connection should you use?
Short answer: Gemini CLI and the Gemini web app have different connection and availability requirements. Both can work with compatible remote MCP servers, but neither path should be described as verified for this specific Studio release until it returns a real WordPress tool response.
| Connection path | Setup location | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini CLI | Local settings.json MCP server entry | Local browser callback and OAuth discovery must work. |
| Gemini web custom app | Gemini web Connected Apps | Google account, country, language and feature eligibility apply. |
| WPBridge Studio direct mode | Your WordPress installation | The direct MCP endpoint and registered callback must match. |
| WPBridge Studio hosted mode | Hosted Studio customer workspace | Your site must be verified in that workspace; use its hosted MCP URL. |
Verify a Gemini CLI MCP connection in five steps
- Choose the correct endpoint. For direct mode, copy the actual MCP URL from Settings → WPBridge Studio on your WordPress site. For hosted mode, use the hosted Studio endpoint instead.
- Open the Gemini CLI
settings.jsonconfiguration and add the MCP server usinghttpUrlfor HTTP transport. Use the appropriate OAuth settings and an allowed local callback. - Run Gemini CLI’s
/mcp authflow if authentication is required, then inspect the discovered tools and connector name. - Read the WordPress site status and authenticated user before attempting a content mutation.
- Read a known public page or permitted draft, compare its ID and title, and leave writes disabled until the result matches.
Do not enable automatic trust for every tool. Where OAuth discovery is supported, the CLI can discover endpoints automatically; manually configured redirect URIs must still be accepted by the server. See Gemini CLI’s official MCP server documentation.
Who can use Gemini web custom apps?
As of October 10, 2026, Google’s help page lists eligibility requirements including being at least 18, being in the United States, using a personal Google Account, keeping Gemini activity enabled and using the available English-language experience. Work or school Google Accounts are not supported for this feature according to that guidance. These are Google requirements and may change.
When eligible, open Gemini web settings, find Connected Apps, add a custom MCP app, paste the Studio MCP URL and follow the account authorization steps. If your account does not display Custom Apps, it is not proof that the WordPress plugin itself is broken. Consult Google’s custom-app help page for the current eligibility and steps.
Gemini MCP questions
Can I paste the hosted Studio MCP URL into a direct-mode configuration?
No. Pick one connection model and use the matching URL, account and callback. Hosted subscriptions and direct WordPress licensing are separate products.
Why does Gemini discover tools but fail to update a page?
Tool discovery is not permission to write. Confirm that the WordPress user may edit the page and that all relevant Studio access controls permit writes. Test with a staging draft.
Does WPBridge Studio include Gemini access?
No. Studio supplies a WordPress connection layer, not a Google account or guaranteed access to Google features. See client compatibility status and diagnostic guidance.
