WordPress ChatGPT Plugin Setup: MCP and OAuth

By WPBridge Studio · Product documentation

Connect WordPress to ChatGPT through authorized OAuth and MCP tools. Public plugin downloads are paused during WordPress.org review. WPBridge Studio does not provide standalone ZIP installers or archived versions here. WordPress.org listing (pending approval) · ChatGPT.

What is a WordPress ChatGPT plugin?

It connects WordPress APIs to a conversational client. Studio uses a WordPress companion, an authenticated customer dashboard and MCP. The client can request installed REST actions within the connected WordPress user’s permissions.

What should you check before installing?

Confirm HTTPS, permission to install plugins, Application Password support and authenticated REST access. A CDN or security plugin must preserve the Authorization header and bypass caches for private endpoints. Verify a real site status response before buying a package.

How does the connection work?

Install the companion, verify the site in Studio and approve ChatGPT OAuth using the same account. A plugin installation alone cannot grant ChatGPT access; approval is a separate step. The installation guide includes the endpoint and a read-only test prompt.

Set up your connection

Explore WPBridge Studio, follow the installation guide, then compare packages. Start free and confirm site identity before making changes.

Two ways to connect ChatGPT to WordPress

Answer: Choose between a hosted WPBridge Studio workspace and the direct plugin connection on your own WordPress site. They are not the same deployment or license.

RequirementHosted Studio workspaceDirect WordPress mode
Where the MCP connection runsStudio’s hosted serviceOn the customer’s WordPress site
Studio website accountRequired for the hosted workspaceNot required for the independent direct path
WordPress API credentialDedicated WordPress Application PasswordDirect plugin’s on-site authorization
Paid accessHosted monthly, annual and lifetime packagesPaid direct-mode licensing not yet activated through hosted purchases
Initial safe testList sites, check status and read the current userAuthorize your personal connection and read the on-site identity

Follow the direct connection guide if you want the OAuth and MCP endpoint to run on your WordPress installation. Use the hosted setup guide if you want a managed account and workspace.

Hosted setup: from WordPress plugin to working ChatGPT tool

  1. Prepare WordPress. Ensure HTTPS is valid, the REST API is accessible and the account can install plugins.
  2. Install the companion. The WordPress.org submission is pending review. No installation ZIP is available from WPBridgeStudio.com; check the pending WordPress.org listing and ChatGPT for official access. Existing installations should begin with read-only access.
  3. Choose a dedicated WordPress user. Generate an Application Password for that user; use only the secure Studio dashboard to supply it.
  4. Verify the site. Add the intended HTTPS URL, user and Application Password in the Studio dashboard; confirm that site verification succeeds.
  5. Authorize the AI client. Connect ChatGPT to the hosted MCP URL with OAuth and sign in to the same Studio account.
  6. Read, then decide. Call list_sites, site_status and wordpress_read for /wp/v2/users/me. Do not enable writing until the returned identity is correct.

Client app availability and directory publication are separate from WordPress plugin installation. A working plugin alone does not prove a ChatGPT account can use the connection.

WordPress ChatGPT plugin FAQs

Will the plugin write blog posts automatically?

No. Writing requires a suitable WordPress user, enabled write permissions and an explicit operation. Draft creation and publication are separate actions.

Does the plugin work on WordPress.com?

Only when the particular WordPress.com plan permits installing third-party plugins and the required REST and authorization features are available. Confirm your plan’s restrictions before setup.

Can I use an existing administrator account?

It can authorize broad operations, but a dedicated least-privilege account is safer for editorial work. See security and permissions.

Why does ChatGPT connect but fail to read or change content?

Check that it is the intended Studio connector and site, then inspect the HTTP error, user permissions, read-only controls and REST route. See connection diagnostics.

Official technical documentation

WordPress describes REST authentication and Application Password management. These are general platform references, not evidence that any particular AI client integration has been tested.

Choose the correct MCP URL before connecting ChatGPT

There are two WPBridge Studio paths. A hosted customer workspace connects through https://wpbridgestudio.com/mcp after its dashboard verifies your WordPress site. A direct WordPress connection uses the MCP URL from the plugin settings on your site, typically https://YOUR-SITE/wp-json/wpbridge-studio/v1/mcp. The URLs, account requirements and authorizations are different.

Copyable first request: verify before publishing

Use my WPBridge Studio connection to identify the selected WordPress site and user. Call site_status and read /wp/v2/users/me, then read a known page. Return the HTTP result, site URL, user ID and page ID. Do not create, update, publish or delete anything.

A successful response from the correct site is evidence of the connection and allowed reads. It is not proof that every installed plugin has a writable REST API, nor is it proof that the website will rank in search results.

Common connection failures and solutions

ChatGPT does not display custom MCP connections

First confirm that the current account and workspace support custom MCP connections. Client availability is controlled by the AI provider, not the WordPress plugin.

OAuth authorization fails or expires

Restart the connection from the intended client and check the callback, HTTPS URL and account identity. Used authorization requests should not be replayed.

WordPress REST request returns 401 or 403

Confirm credentials, user permissions and whether the WordPress Application Password is accepted. A 403 may indicate that a valid account lacks capability; do not automatically make the user an administrator. See 401/403 troubleshooting.

ChatGPT can read but cannot edit

Writing is a separate permission decision. Confirm the connector’s access mode and the WordPress user’s capabilities. Test a disposable staging draft, then read it back to verify the saved change.

For commercial evaluation of the underlying product, see the WordPress ChatGPT MCP connector, REST compatibility matrix and hosted usage plans.

After the setup steps, compare the returned data with our verified WordPress connection demonstration. It records site identification, an authenticated user lookup, page reads, draft creation and publication read-back. These results show what was actually tested on our own installation, while ChatGPT account eligibility still has to be verified for each user.
